Ocean City Noreasters Down Central Jersey Spartans

Big 5-0 win sees Noreasters push rivals for top spot

The Nor’easters and Frank Tweneboa put on a show for the Nor’easters faithful at Carey Stadium. Three goals from Tweneboa and one each from Ken Tribbett and substitute Timothy Mulgrew gave the 3 points to the home team. The usual free-flowing exciting soccer was coupled with possession with a purpose as the Nor’easters moved forward as a team and found the net with freedom.

After an exciting W-League game at Carey Stadium that kicked off at 4pm and saw the Washington Spirit Reserves win 2-1 over the New York Magic. Goals from Amber Stobbs on the 66th minute and Ashley Herndon on the 82nd minute sealed the victory for the Maryland side even though Brittany Pfaff pulled one back in the 87th minute to make it an exciting finale to the game.

Mark Geiger who refereed Mexico v Costa Rica at the Azteca and is a top FIFA level referee was in attendance as a mentor for the man in the middle of the action.

Ken Tribbett opened the scoring early on the 11th minute with a cheeky flick after great work from Frank Tweneboa. Tweneboa beat the left back, got to the goal line and pulled it back for Tribbett who flicked it past the keeper with his right heel.

The Nor’easters continued to dominate the first half. A headed chance from Correa, a shout for handball in the box and Dwayne Reid always threatening put the Nor’easters in a comfortable position but the Spartans counter attack always looked capable of causing damage.

Ocean City Nor’easters second goal came from Tweneboa, his mis-hit pass managed to spin and squirm past the scrambling Spartans keeper on the 36th minute. The second OceanCity goal effectively ended the game as a competitive spectacle as the Nor’easters piled on continued pressure. Zoncher Dennis danced his way past two defenders and a goalkeeper but his shot was cleared off the line as it rolled towards the net.

The second half began as the first ended. The Nor’easters continue to pass and move and press the Spartans. This pressure resulted in a penalty to the home team after JP Correa was bundled over inside the area. Tweneboa stepped up and added a second goal to his earlier assist. On the 73rd minute Tweneboa whipped a ball across the right from the left and substitute Timothy Mulgrew was there to finish. Tweneboa went on to win and then convert another penalty after being scythed down after beating two Spartans defenders.

The game finished 5-0 with Frank Tweneboa being named MVP of the Game and a wonderfully appreciative Nor’easters fan base applauded the team for such a fabulous performance.

Coach Tim Oswald was delighted with the performance and result, “The boys were clinical in the attacking third tonight and finished of their chances with great skill. Frank Tweneboa was immense and showed what an offensive threat he can be. Overall the guys showed great bouncebackability and this is testament to the character of the players we have in OceanCity”.
