Were the Barons caught looking ahead to Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup match against Crystal Palace Baltimore? Historically, they certainly haven’t as Friday was the first time they have lost a game prior to an Open Cup match (5-1-2).
"Everyone will be eager to get back on the field on Tuesday and put this game behind us," said head coach Neil Holloway.
Holloway added, "Their high pressure style really took us out of the game, combined with a tough home crowd, we just got caught up in the moment and played right into their hands."
The Fury struck first in the 14th minute when Will Beauge slammed home a loose ball following a corner kick by Martin Vickerton. Barons goalkeeper Tunde Ogunbiyi (Boston College / Gwynedd, PA) would keep the Fury from adding a second minutes later when he saved a well-placed header by Beauge off a free kick. Ogunbiyi finished with two saves in the game.
Ocean City had their best chance before halftime when Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) got in behind the defense, forcing a big save by Fury netminder Mike Drozd. The Ottawa defense cleared the ball and quickly put the home side on the offensive, resulting in a goal by Liam Maloney that was called back when the referee’s assistant determined the play was offside.
The Barons continued to push for the equalizer, but Ottawa would put the game out of reach in the 80th minute when Florian Deschamps finished a breakaway by chipping the helpless Ogunbiyi to make it 2-0.
It was a frantic final ten minutes, but neither team added to their total. The match was a very stop-and-go kind of contest with 49 total fouls between each team.
The Barons have two more regular season road games before they return home on June 20 to face the Brooklyn Knights. Next Saturday they will travel to Westchester, New York for their second meeting with the Flames.
With their first loss of the season under their belt, they shift their focus to professional side Crystal Palace Baltimore of the USL Second Division, who will visit Carey Stadium on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The game is a First Round U.S. Open Cup match and if the Barons are able to upset Baltimore, they will host their Second Round game against the winner of the Aegean Hawks and Real Maryland Monarchs on June 16 at The Beach House.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for kids. For more information on the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup visit www.usopencup.com.
