Ocean City's PDL MVP Chevy Walsh signs with Pittsburgh Riverhounds

Record-breaking season earns Nor'easters forward a pro contract

After a record breaking season for the Ocean City Nor’easters in Premier Development League (PDL), Chevaughn "Chevy" Walsh is moving on to the pros.

Walsh signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), making him the 54th player in Ocean City club history to sign with a professional team.

The Jamaican, who played his college ball at Jefferson College in Missouri, was named the 2016 PDL MVP after becoming the first Nor'easters player to ever win the league's scoring title 14 goals and 3 assists in 14 games.

He broke Ocean City's single-season record for goals and points and led the team to the 2016 Eastern Conference championship. He scored two goals and had two assists to help the Nor'easters defeat three division champions in the playoffs and earn a spot in the PDL Semifinals. His 16 goals and 5 assists in all competitions was the most in club history. Walsh also finished the season ranked No. 2 on the PDL's Top Prospects list.

“Chevaughn is truly an impressive talent,” Nor’easters general manager Kevin Nuss said. “As a player that came from very meager beginnings in Jamaica, Chevy is incredibly humble and appreciative of every opportunity he has earned. The combination of his on-the-field ability, willingness to work hard, be a great teammate and give back to the community is truly impressive. He is an excellent example of the character of Ocean City, New Jersey, and what we value at the Nor'easters."

“Chevaughn truly has raw talent and has continued to improve at every level he has participated, from a first-team NJCAA All-American at Jefferson College to PDL Most Valuable Player," Nuss added. "As he continues to tap into his natural abilities, refine his talents and mature as a person and a player, Chevaughn is a player with the potential of a very long and successful professional career. Everyone in Ocean City, New Jersey, is excited to follow Chevy on his journey.”

Walsh joins a Riverhounds team that features another Ocean City alum, Jordan Murrell, who played at the Beach House during the 2013 season. He becomes the fourth Ocean City player to sign with the Riverhounds, joining Gabe Bernstein (2003), Vicente Bastidas (2003) and Murrell.

“We think Chevaughn can be a really good forward. He’s still young, but he can be good right away and he’s only going to get better,” Riverhounds Head Coach Dave Brandt told the USL website. “If it’s possible to call the PDL MVP an uncovered diamond, or a diamond in the rough, I just think until recently nobody knew about him, and he really exploded onto the PDL scene with a big year. And we’re thrilled to have him here – it’s just a really good, and big, signing for the club.”
