Ocean City Nor’easters vs Pittsburgh Riverhounds; Carey Stadium, Tuesday May 21st, 7:30pm kick off

After defeating the New York Red Bulls U23 team 2-0 on Tuesday 14th May the Ocean City Nor’easters were rewarded with a home game against USL Pro team Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The game will take place at Carey Stadium on Tuesday 21st May with a 7:30pm kick off.

USL Pro is seen as the second level in the professional soccer leagues just behind Major League Soccer (MLS). The Riverhounds are struggling this season with a single victory against new franchise Phoenix FC Wolves 2-1. This was their first victory of the 2013 season after 7 games without a win.

The Riverhounds reached the second round of the US Open Cup after struggling with amateur team RWB Adria from the USASA league. RWB Adria took the Pittsburgh side to a penalty shoot out after having a 1-0 lead for much of the game. The Riverhounds won 5-4 on penalties and this set up the fixture with the Ocean City Nor’easters.

The prize for these two teams is a 3rd round game with the MLS team Philadelphia Union. The third round of the US Open Cup is where all of the teams who enter want to be as the MLS teams enter the competition. The prestige and financial rewards for the smaller professional teams and amateur teams is what makes the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup such a unique and fantastic tournament in American sports.
