After suffering a loss last weekend on the road against Reading United, the Ocean City Nor’easters looked to get some revenge against their long-time rival. Unfortunately they came up short, losing 2-0 at Carey Stadium.
The loss snapped Ocean City’s 10-game home unbeaten streak, marking their second-longest streak in club history. It was the 47th meeting between the two clubs and with Reading's win, the all-time series is now even at 20 wins, 20 losses and 7 draws.
Reading’s Felipe Hideki knocked home the opening goal in the 35th minute of play. After Kalil El Medkhar’s initial shot bounced off Todd Morton’s hands, Hideki was there to put the ball in the back of the net.
The first half ended in a score of 1-0.
“The first half Reading took control of the pace and had more of the chances where they scored their first goal,” said Nor'easters general manager Giancarlo Granese.
As the second half was in full swing Ignacio Tellechea provided one of the best opportunities by shooting a laser shot into the arms of Strutz in the 60th minute of play. Simone Raiola picked up the pace, speeding down the field in the 64th and 78th minutes, but his efforts fell short.
Khori Bennett would later score Reading’s second goal in the 86th minute. The goal came on a great save from Reading’s goalie which then started a counter attack. Unfortunately, the Reading forward was about to beat Ocean City’s center backs, receive a through ball and lob it over Morton’s head in goal.
Even though the goal occurred late, Granese was extremely proud of his team.
“We came out blazing and had several chances and more of the play,” said Granese.
In addition to the offensive sparks throughout the game, the saves by Morton kept the game more level than it could have been. Granese acknowledged after the game that tonight’s “loss was a tough one.”
Ocean City will look to bounce back this coming Saturday at the Beach House as they play host to Evergreen FC.
