Inaugural Ocean City Nor'easters womens tryout a success

Players seeking a spot on this summer's EDP team showcased their skills

The Ocean City Nor’easters hosted its first tryout for perspective women to join the organization's brand new team that will be starting this summer in the Eastern Development Program (EDP).

Despite a cold and rainy morning at Rutgers-Camden University, 12 invited players came out to try impress the Ocean City coaching staff led by head coach Bill O’Neill and assistant Charlie Flowe.

“In spite of the bad weather, we had a great turnout with some excellent talent that we will look to sign immediately for our women's team,” said Nor’easters general manager Kevin Nuss, who was observing the trialists.

The tryout consisted of players first warming up in drills led by men’s team assistant coach Christos Economopoulos. After that, players split into groups for small sided games led by Economopoulos and O’Neill. While, the goalkeeper trialists were put through their paces by Flowe, the team's goalkeeping coach.

It ended with a full sided game with players going at game speed to show off their skills to the coaches and spectators in attendance. Goals were scored on both ends and many of the players left lasting impressions on coaches.

For Flowe, it was good start on the first step of this team’s long journey.

“I think it went very well," said Flowe. "We had some good players come out today and the weather was a lot better than excepted. All the players that came out today showed they have skills and the ability to play at a high level. There was instant chemistry with several players today. Overall, I was impressed with everyone who came out.”

The 2016 game schedule will be announced at a later date and the Nor’easters coaching staff will continue to look at building its roster.

“Everyone involved in women's team has been working endlessly on getting good Ocean City & Philadelphia area players on this team,” stated Flowe. “The biggest thing for us is reaching out and letting people that we have a women's team and we plan to run it as well as the men's PDL team.”
